I read a short article about some herbel helpers that we can do at home for when our children or family members get a cold. There are two things that can help lighten symptoms. One, is Thyme-Honey syrup and the other is Peppermint tea. I have used the tea trick for a long time, but the thyme one is new. Thyme is really good for helping the body fight the cold better too.
I grow lemon thyme in my garden and mixed in with the perennial beds. It is a great filler and awesome with fish. Place some fish in tinfoil with butter and some lemon thyme. Seal it up and place on grill until fish is flaky. Yum!
Thyme can be dried and kept in a sealed container to be used in a cold helper when needed in the winter.
For Cold and Flu:
Thyme works to loosen up mucus in the lungs. Honey helps sooth sore throat and has antibacterial properties.
- 2 cups of water
- 1 oz dried thyme leaves
- 1 cup of honey
- Boil water in small pan
- Remove from heat and add thyme to steep covered
- After cooling, strain into jar and mix in honey
- Store in fridge for 3 months
- Dosage: kids 10 & younger, 1 tsp. several times per day; 11-13, 2 tsp; teens and adults 1 tbs as needed. Don't give honey to babies under 1 year old!
Upset stomach or headache:
Peppermint tea helps with digestion. Upset or nervous stomach from a cold or test. Also some headaches can be caused by a nervous stomach or indigestion so a little peppermint tea can help! Drink about 1/2 cup of tea at the start of the stomach ache or headache and then another 1/2 cup twice per day as needed.
